PITTSBURGH- The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging cautions older adults to be wary of unscrupulous home repair contractors, particularly in the wake of the recent severe weather.
“Many area homeowners are faced with the prospect of major repair work as the result of the snowstorm damage,” says Mildred Morrison, Administrator of the Area Agency on Aging. “Although many home improvement companies do a great job of producing quality work, there are also unscrupulous individuals who will prey upon others, particularly those who are in a vulnerable situation.”
Home repair scams often begin with a telephone solicitation or someone at the door telling you that they noticed that you are in need of some home repairs. It is best not to allow unfamiliar people into your home without a friend or family member present. Most reputable home repair businesses would not find it necessary to solicit business by going door to door.
Before contacting a home repair company, it is wise to have a clear idea of what it is that is needed to repair the damage. If you are unsure of what is necessary, you may want to have someone you trust take a look at the damage. It is much easier to be talked into additional or unnecessary work, at a much higher price than you intended, when you are unclear of what is actually needed.
By following a few basic suggestions, homeowners can protect themselves from being victimized by those who often target people who are older or have a limited income.
- Talk to family and friends to get the names of reputable contractors that have done quality work for them.
- Check with the attorney generals office or Better Business Bureau to make sure that it is a legitimate business you are dealing with.
- Get at least two written estimates before choosing a contractor.
- Do not rely on the salesperson to explain the contract. It may be wise to have a trusted friend, family member or attorney review the contract.
- Do not sign anything that you feel pressured by the salesperson into signing.
- Make sure that any contract that you sign has a starting date and an estimated completion date.
- Be sure that you receive a copy of everything that you sign.
By doing your homework and being prepared for the prospect of home repair, you can minimize the chances of being victimized. If you do fall victim to a scam, immediately call your local police and report the incident. Do not be embarrassed, for your reporting the incident may prevent others from being taken advantage of.
