PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced that County naturalists will conduct maple sugaring events on the first three Saturdays in March.
Maple syrup making demonstrations will take place on Sat., March 6, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at North Park’s Latodami Nature Center located at 575 Brown Road in Pine Twp. Park Naturalist Meg Scanlon will teach home-style methods to tap trees and collect and boil down sap to make maple syrup. For additional information, call 724-935-2170.
The Boyce Park Maple Sugaring Festival will be held on Sat., March 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Boyce Park’s Nature Center located at 675 Old Frankstown Road in Plum. Park Naturalist Tammy Watychowicz will discuss and demonstrate pioneer, Native-American and modern methods of maple sugaring. Festival attendees will enjoy free samples. Also on Sat., March 13, Park Naturalist John Doyle will host a maple sugaring demonstration from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Round Hill Park’s Visitors Center located at 651 Round Hill Road in Elizabeth Twp. Attendees will learn the fascinating history and process of maple sugaring, and then taste the results. For more information, call 412-835-0143.
A nature sugar class will take place on Sat., March 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Harrison Hills Park Environmental Learning Center located at 5200 Freeport Road in Harrison Twp.
